Guest column from karenstintz: Subway riders aren't the winners in TTC's sole-source deal with Rogers
The TTC would have been within its rights to cancel the contract with BAI at any time after the company utterly failed to deliver to the expectations of the contract and bring the cellular providers to the table. The service BAI offered was spotty wifi coverage throughout the subway and irregular cellphone coverage for the few Freedom Mobile customers in some stations.
The only shame that Rick Leary has delivered is to himself and the TTC board that approved the sole-source deal that will still not deliver equal cellphone coverage within the tunnels.Article content Instead of realizing its obligations to negotiate with the other providers, Rogers has set out a framework that all but guarantees this issue won’t be solved in any meaningful way. The delays will work to Rogers’ advantage as they begin to undertake the necessary infrastructure work to support cellular coverage.Article content
