The creative team behind HBO's TheTimeTravelersWife, Steven Moffat & David Nutter, broke down how they adapted the beloved novel, how ordinary love can make for extraordinary sci-fi, and just how they handled the issue of age differences:
Steven Moffat may be best known for his work on the sci-fi sensation Doctor Who, but he's always had a romantic streak in him - and that romance often comes with comedy bordering on the absurd. The Time Traveler's Wife, premiering May 15 on HBO, will be his chance to merge all of those genres together.
And how many seasons will it take to tell the story? I already know the answer to that, but I'm not telling you. Sorry. That's for us to know - or it's for me to know. You've got to have some secrets. But I was inspired by the source material; I love it. I riffed on it a few times on Doctor Who, as everybody knows. And it was a pleasure to get to deal with the real version in a television format, which I think really suits it.
Some of my favorite sequences in the book wouldn't make an hour of television. So, you've got to find a way of making it make an hour of television. I think the key to me is - I don't want to overstate this, but it's almost like treating the book as a series format. Saying,"Here are the further adventures," or,"Even more adventures of Henry and Clare.
David, Desmin Borges spoke about how easy and seamless you made it for the actors to change ages and really step into their characters at different phases in their life. What was it like making that happen, from a directorial perspective? Steven Moffat: I don't think out of sequence is as difficult as people think it is. I think our memories work like that, anyway. The story of your life is stored in your head, right? You know the story of your own life. Is it in sequence? If you think about your life, do you think about day one, day two, day three? No, it's a whole jumble of events that are ordered by priority or interest; that are linked together because they're about the same thing or happened in the same place.
David Nutter: And also, memories are such that there may be an event that happened 10 years ago that you remember every moment of. There may be an event that happened last week that you forget even happened. I think that the weight of emotions and the weight of memories [reflect] how importantly they play in your life.
How challenging was it to elegantly explore the relationship between the adult Henry and the child Clare? David Nutter: There's a wonderful line that Stephen wrote... when Rose is now 16. He says something about - what is it, Steven? Steven Moffat: The one who has the real problem is really Clare. She's got a very clear idea of what this man is like. And she hasn't been through the thing that most young women have, where the man they like isn't quite the man they'd like them to be. That's a very normal situation that happens to everyone.
Expanding on their interactions as a child versus adult. From Clare's perspective, it's very different than from Henry's, because this is the man of her dreams when she's too young to really understand what that would entail.
Obviously, Time Traveler's Wife does that in a slightly mad way, because it's a time travel story. But it's the story of us all. That's why I think people respond to the story. Because although is extreme and fantastical, it reflects the process of falling in love.
