Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian weighed in on a number of topics during his Wednesday stop at the Houston Touchdown Club.Steve Sarkisian stood before a ballroom flooded with orange Wednesday, speaking with bass in his voice and a fire lit under him.
Sarkisian looked back on the six-game losing streak — the school’s first in 65 years — that helped Texas plummet to 5-7 on the season, calling the Longhorns’ multiple forfeited leads “excruciating.” “Was that scheme?” Sarkisian asked. “Was that physical ability? Was that play-calling? Or was it a belief? Was it a mindset?”“I don’t think we were close enough as a football team when adversity struck,” Sarkisian said. “In the midst of COVID, in the midst of all the crap that was going on when I first got here, I didn’t do enough to connect our football team to where they can be accountable to one another.
While Sarkisian was elated about his latest coaching hires, when asked about anything he’d change on the NCAA front, he expressed how much he dislikes being able to hire only 10 coaches. He referenced the NFL and how there’s no limit there. He told the crowd he’d flat out drop the rule of counting coaches, saying that if he wanted to hire 20 coaches, he should be able to.
