Steve Martin jokes that Martin Short and he 'didn’t do that well hosting the GoldenGlobes this year,' in response to a report the Only Murders in the Building stars are a top pick to host the Oscars.
Steve Martin jokes about the Golden Globe Awards amid rumors he could host this year's Oscars. Martin has had a long, multifaceted career as a successful comedian, actor, and musician, being able to incorporate all three of his talents simultaneously in his work. He has been bestowed with many honors and life achievement awards, including an Honorary Academy Award and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, while receiving multiple other accolades.
In addition to acting in the Hulu show, Martin also co-created Only Murders in the Building, for which he was nominated for his sixth Golden Globe Award. The awards are run and voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, an organization that has long faced a series of controversies, including bullying, self-dealing, and corruption, with instances of being influenced and lavishly treated by certain programs in exchange for nominations.
Martin has previously emceed the Oscars back in 2001 and 2003, with his last stint in 2010 with Alec Baldwin, his co-star in the 2009 movie It's Complicated. Martin also delivered an opening monologue with previous Oscar host, Chris Rock, during the 2020 ceremony. With a predictive and relentless yearly decrease in ratings, it is clear that the Oscars are trying to gain back their viewership.
While not much can be examined by Martin's post of whether he will consider hosting the Academy Awards again, it is very classic for him to respond with such a comical tone. While the Oscars are still in pursuit of finding a host for their upcoming award show, the HFPA need to continue making major changes before the Golden Globe Awards can return to television and the industry takes them seriously again.
