No one was as heavily targeted as he was, and Freiermuth won all over the field.
Freiermuth had to be targeted over ten times in a practice where the Steelers did far less intensive team work than most practices. He caught just about every ball thrown his way, and this is why he is in line for an extension. Freiermuth is a savvy route runner that finds the soft spots in zones and makes tough grabs with vice-grip hands. He can be that safety blanket for these quarterbacks, and it should be expected that he will end up being that.
However, Jackson was targeted the most out of anyone on Thursday. He broke up at least three passes, including a slot fade towards Pickens. Jackson stood up to all the challenges the Steelers coaches threw his way. That is what we saw on Thursday. Smith ran almost exclusively outside zone, something that he ran 54 percent of the time a season ago in Atlanta, by far the most in the NFL. So, the run game diversity certainly was not there, but it does not need to be if the team can block it up.
So, it will be fascinating to see how this plays out, and how Jones performs in this second season while they experiment with this. General manager Omar Khan did say that at some point Jones will be a left tackle, but it is not necessarily going to be to start the season.DeMarvin Leal had a nice day on Thursday. He had two solid run stuffs and a sack. He needs to show consistency, but this is a nice start to training camp for him.
Keeanu Benton is hoping to see more work in sub-packages this year. He is down to 300 pounds from 315 a year ago, and looks even nimbler than he did a season ago. Benton might just be in for a monster season.
