Among the documents to be included in the trove are communications between departmental officials and President Trump’s private lawyers and associates.

WASHINGTON — The State Department has agreed to release documents related to President Trump’s handling of aid to Ukraine, potentially providing ammunition to the impeachment probe now being conducted by Democrats in the House of Representatives.

At the time, American Oversight’s executive director, Austin Evers, deemed the decision a “major setback” for the Trump administration. However, it was not clear just how the State Department would respond. The department instructed Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, not to testify. He did so anyway.

Among the documents to be included in the trove are communications between departmental officials and Trump’s private lawyers and associates, in particular Rudolph Giuliani, Victoria Toensing or Joseph diGenova.

The agreement will also require the State Department to turn over calendar entries pertaining to Yovanovitch’s dismissal, as well as any meetings with Trump’s personal lawyer, and meetings pertaining to a potential Biden investigation in Ukraine.
