The Star Wars prequel trilogy offered a vision of the Jedi Order in decline, far too closely bound to the Galactic Republic and thus vulnerable to the political manipulation of the Sith. But, although the Jedi and the Republic were generally considered to exist in a state of symbiosis, the two were originally separate entities.
