Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Rebecca Romijn says Una Chin-Riley/Number One's season 2 story resembles Mystique's in X-Men. Romijn debuted as the second-in-command to Anson Mount's Captain Pike in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, with that crew later getting their own series. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 is currently in production following a renewal announcement in January 2022.
The first officer of the Enterprise during Pike's tenure as captain, Una Chin-Riley is one of the captain's most trusted allies throughout Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1. Despite her career and rank, Una is an Illyrian, a humanoid species that perform genetic modification to account for their environment, putting them at odds with the Federation's laws against such alterations and the ban on Illyrians joining and serving.
It will be expanded upon in the second season, yes…. And what also is really strange about it, and I probably shouldn’t say this, but I kept going back to when I was playing Mystique as a mutant. I had little bits of dialogue in season 2 that were literally word-for-word things I said in the X-Men series before. But they are related. They are two characters, and I relate them.
Romijn's shape-shifting mutant Mystique is one of the villains of 20th Century Fox's 2000 superhero film X-Men, who serves as the right-hand to Ian McKellan's Magneto. In the series, Mystique works alongside Magneto in his campaign against humans who pose a threat to mutantkind, using her powers to pose as influential individuals to kidnap, kill, and obtain highly sensitive information.
While Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 will feature a crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks and explore more of Paul Wesley's younger James T. Kirk, Una's uncertain fate is sure to also play a key focus of the season. As such, not only is Romijn's response a fun way to connect her Star Trek role to her Marvel character, but also provides an interesting clue about how Una may develop in the upcoming season.
