Star Trek 4 remains mired in developmental hell while Star Trek: Discovery is ending on Paramount+. The solution? A crossover movie.
Star Trek 4 should become a crossover film with Star Trek: Discovery so that Captain James T. Kirk meets Captain Michael Burnham on the big screen. The fourth J.J. Abrams-produced Star Trek movie remains mired in development hell despite Chris Pine and the cast's eagerness to crew the Starship Enterprise once more. Meanwhile, Star Trek: Discovery's upcoming fifth season will end the flagship Paramount+ Trek show. The solution to both dilemmas could be a historic crossover movie.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Jonathan Frakes, one of the most successful directors of Star Trek movies and TV, recently indicated his "understanding" that Paramount Pictures has exclusive rights to make Star Trek feature films while Paramount+ has dominion over Star Trek TV shows. This divide means that the only Star Trek movies that can be made will be set in J.J.
Star Trek: Discovery season 3 already laid the groundwork for a crossover by revealing the 32nd-century United Federation of Planets knows about the Kelvin Timeline after the Temporal Wars. Perhaps a dire threat to both timelines could send the USS Discovery to the Kelvin reality, and the USS Enterprise could return the favor by jumping to the Prime Universe.
Jonathan Frakes Would Be The Best Director For A Discovery Star Trek 4 Crossover The best possible director for a crossover film between Star Trek 4 and Star Trek: Discovery would be Jonathan Frakes, who already lobbied for the chance to helm Star Trek 4. Frakes is the undisputed most popular director among the Star Trek TV series casts, and Frakes also directed the best and most successful of the Star Trek: The Next Generation films, Star Trek: First Contact.
In fact, Frakes already has crucial experience directing crossovers; he is the man behind the camera of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2's crossover episode with Star Trek: Lower Decks. Frakes indicated this crossover is a "flat-out comedy," cementing his skill with genres. Of course, for Star Trek: Discovery to cross over with Star Trek 4, Paramount Pictures and Paramount+ would have to break their current business structure.
