What if Las Vegas released the College Football Playoff rankings? AriWasserman and Andy_Staples took a swing at it. ◽️ No. 1: Georgia ◽️ No. 2: Ohio State ◽️ No. 3: Alabama ◽️ No. 4: Tennessee ◽️ No. 5 Michigan
When Ari Wasserman took part in the mock College Football Playoff selection exercise earlier this season, he asked CFP executive director Bill Hancock if committee members ever looked at hypothetical point spreads to help determine whether one team should be ranked higher than another.Monday night, that dynamic duo had another exchange.
But Wasserman had a great point. The CFP selection committee members have access to reams of information, including every advanced statistic known to mankind. They use this information to place the teams in order. Guess who else uses that same information? The people who set the point spreads every week. The key difference? The people setting the number must set it accurately if they hope to stay employed.
So what if the people who set the line ranked the teams for the CFP? What if, instead of trying to ensure even action on both sides, they formulated a pure margin of victory in a series of hypothetical, neutral-field matchups? How different might that ranking look from the CFP selection committee’s ranking?had a loss at this point in the season, the hypothetical spreads still would have favored most Crimson Tide teams over everyone else. They’d be a seven-point favorite against the No.
We imagined on our live CFP Ranking reaction show Tuesday night what such a ranking might look like. In reality, the linemakers might still have Texas in the top 10. We’re limiting our field to teams that the actual committee might still consider for the four-team field. The best team in the SEC that has made a habit of sucking the soul out of its opponents, Georgia is viewed as the best team in the country by the general public.
