Stampede's elimination of Wildcard Saturday a 'good bad thing' for riders, ropers yyc
Bareback rider Clayton Biglow, pictured with I’m A Winner during this year’s Calgary Stampede, says the elimination of Wildcard Saturday allows athletes to participate in other rodeos before a possible return to Calgary for Showdown Sunday.“Yeah … you’re used to the normal setup here in Calgary,” American bareback star Clayton Biglow said. “But you know, it’s a good bad thing. Wildcard round kind of gives you another shot to make the go-round if you don’t make it past your pool.
That’s one less day to wrangle some cash — two if you were coming back for Wildcard Saturday — although the Stampede has added more dollars in each day’s purse — with $7,000 going to each winner, up from $5,500 in previous years — and one extra pay-slot for each event. The payout is now for six instead of five competitors per discipline.Article content
“Yeah … the only benefit of eliminating the wildcard is a lot of us will go here towards the end of the week. We’ll go back to the States and go to some really good rodeos — like Sheridan and Casper — and then there’s a lot of guys that qualified for the grand national circuit — the NFR Open in Colorado Springs. And so it’s nice for guys to be able to have an opportunity to work both. That’s really important for guys that are rodeoing for a living.
More than 200 of the top rodeo contestants from each of the 12 U.S. and Canadian circuits, plus national champions from Mexico, make up the guest list, with $1 million in payouts to contestants, livestock and other Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association members.Article content
