Former Georgia Democratic gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams is keeping the door open to another stab at pursuing political office.
Following her loss in the 2022 midterm elections, Abrams insisted that she"may run again" and fondly reflected on the inroads Democrats have been able to make in the Peach State following decades of Republican rule.“I may run again, but I’ve always said that it’s not about the title, it’s about the work,” Abrams said in an interview on Good Morning America.
Abrams ran a tight race against Gov. Brian Kemp in 2018 and fiercely criticized the state's voting laws following her narrow defeat. Her strong showing in that race earned her fanfare in progressive circles, but despite her strength on the fundraising circuit, she lost by a larger margin in her second go-around in 2022.
Earlier this month, Sen. Raphael Warnock defeated Republican football star Herschel Walker in a Senate runoff race, becoming the only Democrat to win a major statewide race in Georgia in the midterm cycle. "We're continuing to move forward," Abrams said of Warnock's win."It's been 20-plus years of Republican domination in Georgia. In 2020, 2021, we started to make that shift. It didn't happen overnight, and it's not going to happen overnight, but our job is to continue to build within the coalition of voters we have not only a sense of possibility, but using Sen. Warnock as an example, a sense of opportunity and achievement.
She underscored the need to continue reaching out to voters in non-election years. Abrams also maintained that while she was unsure about her future in the political realm, in the"policy space, my job is to keep talking about issues."Abrams is promoting her new children's book, Stacey's Remarkable Books, which was published earlier this month that paid homage to her childhood.
