Spring Branch ISD will no longer provide free breakfasts and lunches for all its students this year because federal pandemic funding for the meals is ending. District families in need are encouraged to apply for assistance.

Students get lunch of homemade pizza and caesar salad at the Albert D. Lawton Intermediate School, in Essex Junction, Vt., on Thursday, June 9. The pandemic-era federal aid that made school meals available for free to all public school students — regardless of family income levels — is ending, raising fears about the effects in the upcoming school year for families already struggling with rising food and fuel costs.

The Keep Kids Fed Act of 2022 recently passed by Congress kept some provisions that started during the pandemic, but it stopped short of funding the free meals for the fall. The changes for next year are a result of changes in the federal meals program that impacts all public school districts, not just Spring Branch ISD.

Though discouraged that the United States Department of Agriculture did not extend the no-cost meals for every child into the new school year, Francis said Spring Branch ISD is dedicated to assisting families and helping them adapt to the new policy in order to adhere to USDA requirements. Lexi Marshall, Spring Branch ISD assistant director of communications, said a lot of families at other campuses will qualify for assistance and just need to apply.
