Film starring Jim Parsons and Ben Aldridge, and based on real-life romance looks to prove gay-themed films can find a mainstream movie audience.
Ben Aldridge, left, and Jim Parsons star in the romantic drama “Spoiler Alert,” drawn from the experiences of a real-life couple.The lackluster box office receipts from the heavily promoted rom-com “Bros” earlier this fall might seem like a warning, heightening the anxiety over how the new tearjerker dramedy “Spoiler Alert” gets received by audiences since it, too, focuses on a love between two men.
The funny tearjerker opens Dec. 2 in area theaters and features “The Big Bang Theory’s” Jim Parsons portraying Smurf-loving TV writer Ausiello and “Pennyworth’s” Ben Aldridge playing the photographer/artist Cowan, who stole Ausiello’s heart almost from the start and later died of a rare form of cancer in 2015. Sally Field and onetime Pickle Family Circus member Bill Irwin play Kit’s parents.
“It hit me very hard,” he recalls. “When my husband saw me sobbing through it he said do you think it’ll make a good movie? “I don’t know,” he responded. Both actors felt a tremendous sense of responsibility to be genuine to the two real-life people they’re portraying. Throughout the process, Ausiello was on the set to better inform the authenticity of the production.
Ausiello praises both performances and says he is happy that Parsons never tried to mimic who he is and brought himself into the character, which made it even more powerful.
