Spire Global once again is expanding its reach in monitoring maritime activities from space
The space-to-cloud-analytics company announced an agreement with Kleos Space S.A, a data-as-a-service company based in Luxembourg. The two firms want to create enhanced tools for maritime safety using radio frequency data generated from both Kleos and Spire.
This agreement represents the latest venture for San Francisco-based Spire in Luxembourg, as last month the company announced. This allows participants to pull raw data from Spire satellites to create their own products. "We are witnessing a new awareness and global need for satellite-based, Earth-observation data for business, especially in the fields of weather, maritime vessel tracking and aviation," Spire Global CEO Peter Platzer said in a statement."We are collecting data where no one else can."
Spire specializes in collecting data in radio wavelengths, using more than 100 small satellites in orbit. Radio has a key advantage over visual wavelengths, the company says, because more radio satellites in orbit improve the resolution. Improving the fidelity of visual wavelengths requires larger lenses on individual spacecraft.
The two companies will offer this product in the fourth quarter of 2019."The effort will support and augment tools for governments, maritime agencies, and all organizations with strategic interest in detecting dark vessels," Spire said in a statement, referring to ships that do not use internationally mandated automatic identification system data about a ship's movements and cargo. The partnership will do so by combining Spire's AIS data with Kleos' radio frequency data.
