DENVER — A spike in the number of backcountry enthusiasts getting caught in avalanches across Colorado this season is raising concerns for officials who are worried another round of fresh powder this weekend could trigger more powerful events that could be potentially life-threatening.
A winter weather advisory is in effect through 6 a.m. Saturday for elevations above 9,000 feet, including and Battlement Mesas, Gore and Elk Mountains/Central Mountain Valleys and West Elk and Sawatch Mountains, the Elkhead and Park Mountains and Flat Tops. People traveling to the mountains this weekend should expect snow above 7,500 feet, with snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches and winds gusting as high as 35 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.
