The California Office of the Surgeon General last month hired a communications firm for $250 an hour to help with the state’s coronavirus response, but said Tuesday that it has since voided the $195,000 contract due to a conflict of interest
Burke Harris thanks a Jennifer Pitts for “wise mentorship” in the acknowledgments of her 2019 book, “The Deepest Well: Healing the Long-Term Effects of Childhood Adversity.” Pitts did not respond Tuesday to a request for comment.
Powers, listed as the contract manager, said in a follow-up email, "The Office of the California Surgeon General subsequently identified a conflict of interest and immediately moved to void the contract." She did not describe what the conflict was or specify when the deal was canceled. Powers said Tuesday that the state plans to secure a similar contract "with a revised scope of work and a different vendor."
"The contractor will provide expert consulting services to assist the OSG in the responding to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, for which Governor Gavin Newsom declared an emergency on March 4, 2020. The contractor services will include content strategy and production services, including specialized research, writing, editing and, consultation," the contract states.
