Speaker Dade Phelan announced plans to create of a 15-member committee that is likely to tackle the topic of school choice over the summer.
AUSTIN, Texas — Speaker Dade Phelan, who adjourned the Texas House only a day into the first special session, has signaled some commitment to tackling the state’s school choice debate with the creation of a 15-member committee that has been named the Select Committee on Educational Opportunity and Enrichment.
Gov. Greg Abbott has promised a special session, possibly entirely dedicated to school choice, in the coming months Phelan announced the committee on the day Gov.
Abbott promised the legislature would come back to consider school choice “at the appropriate time,” which appears to be closer to the rumored start date of September. Phelan, in charges to his select committee, has set Aug. 11 as a deadline for a final report. “If you’re familiar with House Bill 100, you can expect it to look like that. There was a bundle of several things together,” Abbott said. “HB 100 does involve school choice. Another part involves the elimination of the STAAR test. Another component involves $4.6 billion in more funding, including teacher pay raises and other funding strategies.”
