using Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell satellite in space, SpaceX announced that they could post on X for the first time using a mobile phone with the help of its satellite services.The Elon Musk-led SpaceX aims to offer global cell phone service and plans to launch its Direct to Cell service for customers later this year. Musk retweeted SpaceX’s post, adding that no special equipment, other than a mobile phone and a satellite, was used for connectivity.

Connecting to satellites can be challenging when there’s heavy tree cover. Trees can obstruct the line of sight between the satellite and the receiving device, causing signal interference or loss. This was the tree cover in a small valley in the Santa Cruz Mountains earlier in the day when we were exchanging some DMs on X.Connecting cell phones to satellites has other hurdles as well. The rapid movement of satellites, Doppler shift, timing delays, and the difficulty of connecting mobile phones to distant satellites due to low antenna gain and transmit power.
