Fire safety and the Heimlich maneuver were also explained and demonstrated. Blood pressure screenings were offered at no charge as well.Olmsted Falls Fire Department firefighter/paramedic Randy Kimbro demonstrated how to apply a tourniquet as part of his Stop the Bleed presentation. “Breathing doesn’t matter and the heart doesn’t matter if we don’t act quickly to stop the bleed ,” Kimbro said.

“That is the first thing you focus on, and the very first thing you need to control. Nothing else matters.” He added that Southwest General over the past few years has provided Stop the Bleed kits in school classrooms across the area. Kimbro noted shooting incidents with severe bleeding also occur, however, in industrial and commercial settings and in churches.SWGHC Community Outreach Coordinator Laurie Pfahler, R.N., said working with the public at events like this is “the best job in the world.”

Free blood pressure screenings were offered at the Southwest General Health Center Emergency Safety Education Fair. “Our community is very important to us, and these are skills everyone should know how to do,” Pfahler said. “At Southwest, health and wellness is our mission. We aim to provide total care for everyone. Body, mind and spirit.”If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
