Malachi James broke the wind-legal 100 dash state record at Meet of Champions on Wednesday.
The Burlington City senior ran the fastest legal 100 dash time in state history on Wednesday, clocking in a 10.28 to secure his second Meet of Champions title in the event. His time resets the previous record set by Camden’s Jamar Ervin Camden, who ran a 10.35 with a +2.0 wind reading at Meet of Champions in 2000. James, who is set to compete in both football and track at Syracuse, finished first in prelims with a 10.49.
James ran the fastest all-conditions time in state history at the South, Group 4 sectional meet at Pennsauken, but that time was not legal due to the wind gauges not being operable. James, who won the 100 dash as a sophomore at Willingboro , is only the second athlete in state history to win a Meet of Champions title with two different schools. Michelle Glover was the first to do it, winning the 100 at Pennsauken in 1978 and at Willingboro in 1980. James transferred to Burlington City for his junior year, but a series of string of hamstring injuries during the 2023 indoor and outdoor season ended his season in April.
