Members of Team USA women’s soccer team, Sophia Smith, Trinity Rodman and Mallory Swanson, join TODAY to talk about their dramatic extra-time goal against Germany that secured their place to play for gold against Brazil in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Team USA soccer star Sophia Smith got her birthday wish. During a recent interview with TODAY's Hoda Kotb, Smith talked about her Aug. 10 birthday, which also falls on the same day her team went against Brazil at the Paris Olympics. During their conversation, Hoda hinted that she knew what Smith wanted for her 24th birthday. 'We have an idea,' Hoda teased while also manifesting Team USA's future win. “There’s only one thing I want for my birthday,” Smith replied with a smile.
In the game, Team USA's Mallory Swanson scored the winning goal. Swanson made her Olympic debut in 2016 at the Rio de Janeiro games where the U.S. women’s national soccer team didn't even make it to the podium. However, she was back on the team again for the Tokyo Olympics that were held in 2021, and that year, Team USA won bronze.
