We chat with Kristen Anderson-Lopez (Lyrikris10) and Robert Lopez about adapting their live stage musical, UpHere, into a heartwarming Hulu series:
Husband and wife duo Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez have teamed up with Hulu to turn their original stage musical, Up Here, into a romantic comedy series for the platform. All eight episodes of the show will be available to stream beginning Friday, March 24th, and will follow Lindsay and Miguel's relationship as they fall in love in New York City. The series was developed for television by Steven Levenson and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel, with Thomas Kail serving as the director.
Kristen Anderson-Lopez: Oh, that's amazing. That's an amazing question. Well, my inner thoughts—they're not necessarily soothing. I would love to have Phoebe Bridgers singing soothing things to me, but they'd probably be more like Julia Louis-Dreyfus singing a whole list of things to worry about. Well, you originally wrote Up Here as a play, right?
As EPs, how involved were you in mapping out the season? Were there certain aspects of your original production that you wanted to preserve?
