Bolstered by a moving performance by Jennifer Kim, the film is a slow-burn, character-driven thriller that brings us to question what is real.
Written and directed by Olivia West Lloyd, Somewhere Quiet deals with the aftermath of a Final Girl’s survival. Sure, she may have lived through a traumatic event, but Lloyd’s film examines how that may have affected her. Could someone go back to a normal life after such a horrific experience? How did the experience shape them, and how does it impact their relationship with others? Somewhere Quiet attempts to answer some of these questions, though not in a way you might expect.
Somewhere Quiet starts at the end. Meg’s escape early on puts her in survival mode, bringing her journey full circle, especially as the lack of trust she has throughout the film bleeds into everything. Since it’s from her perspective, we’re thrown into her world and the instinct to flee is strong from the get-go. Lloyd thoughtfully and carefully positions Meg as an unreliable narrator, but one whose reactions and trauma color what we’re seeing.
Meg is a deeply sympathetic character who’s going through a lot, and Jennifer Kim conveys her rising fear and discontent marvelously. She’s contemplative in one instance and freaking out the next, her eyes wandering enough that you can practically see all the scenarios playing out in her head. The slow-burn of it all makes Kim’s performance all the more impressive, as she builds upon the momentum from one scene to the next. Marin Ireland’s performance is unhinged by comparison.
