City Hall renovations are complete as of Monday, May 24, 2021. City Council and staff will move in starting on Tuesday.SAN ANTONIO — This past summer — a historically hot one — the city of San Antonio couldn’t hire and retain enough lifeguards to keep city pools open as often as relief-seeking swimmers wanted. It was yet another sign of the labor shortage that had bedeviled nearly every industry since the COVID pandemic began easing well over a year ago.
The city — which is one of the largest San Antonio employers, with more than 13,000 workers — is following suit. Effective Oct. 1, all municipal employees got a pay bump of at least 7 percent. That includes a 5 percent across-the-board raise and market adjustments of 2 percent or more, based on what other area employers are paying for similar work.
Under the new pay structure, which City Council approved last month as part of the new annual budget, they’ll make $17.50 an hour. That amounts to $36,400 a year for someone working 40 hours a week the entire year.At least 20 positions are seeing pay raises of more than $20,000 this year.
Officials determined the new pay raises by conducting a market analysis of what other San Antonio employers pay compared with the city’s compensation pay. But in a fast-changing job market, the analysis — the city’s first in 14 years — could already be outdated. It relied on data from May 2021.Some departments have had a harder time filling open positions than others.
