The soldier killed was identified by the U.S. Army Alaska on Thursday as 30-year-old Staff Sgt. Seth Michael Plant. A sow with two cubs attacked Plant as he and two other soldiers were setting a course through the woods for navigation training.

Investigators determined a sow with two cubs attacked the group, said Alaska Wildlife Trooper Capt. Derek DeGraaf. A den was found nearby, he said.

Staff Sgt. Seth Michael Plant was killed by a bear on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson on Tuesday, May 10, 2022. “He always had a smile on his face, he always went above and beyond what was asked of him, and he served as an inspiration to all who had the privilege to know him,” Nelson said. “His loss is deeply felt within our organization and we offer our sincere condolences to friends and family.”
