“It’s an intense environment, highly competitive. People dedicate everything they have for this title. There’s no money involved in the winning or anything, it’s all for the love of it.” Tournament placements are announced in reverse order, making for a tense reveal as competitors hope they don’t hear their name called until the end of the list. For Mahler, the win was even more surprising, as she was still recovering from a flu picked up before the contest when she took to the stage.
