Numbers of Manatee have plummeted but a pioneering project to clean up polluted water systems is helping to save them – and it’s great for tourists too ⬇️

This literal grass-roots movement involves the painstaking process of cleaning out the algal growth that squeezes out oxygen, and then hand-planting new eel grass that both cleans the water and provides food for the sea-mammal population.

waterways, initially establishing a non-profit organisation that worked with various community partners to restore the river-bed and unclog the natural springs. It has made a massive difference.“We’ve had incredible support from government leaders and community donations and, so far, we’ve restored over 72 acres of the river and unclogged over 800 spring vents. We hope to have all 92.4 acres of Kings Bay restored by July 2023 in time for Crystal River’s [city’s] 100th anniversary.

On the Atlantic coast, the Indian River has been ground zero for manatee deaths in recent years, with experts estimating that up to 95 per cent of the seagrass has died off along its 156-mile length. More than half of 2021’s casualties were found in the Indian River. “The manatees have also spread the seeds, so the grass has colonised throughout the bay. It’s just been wildly more successful than anybody would have predicted.”
