Hanks explained the situation from in front of his beautifully appointed kitchen, a fitting location for a show billing itself as"Saturday Night Live At Home."
Hanks said it was appropriate for him to be the host since his early COVID-19 diagnosis, along with his wife, Rita Wilson, made him"the celebrity canary in the coal mine for coronavirus. And ever since being diagnosed, I have been more like America's Dad than ever before, since no one wants to be around me very long and I make people uncomfortable."
Hanks even offered a quarantine version of the monologue Q&A, posing as not very well disguised foreign questioners in cutaways. He then described how it would be"weird to see sketches without big sets and costumes, but will it make you laugh … Eh. It's 'SNL.' There will be some good stuff, maybe one or two stinkers. You know the drill."
