On the heels of Sunday’s 15-7 loss in Kansas City, the Padres have beaten the Giants’ two best pitchers on successive nights and are suddenly climbing in the National League wild-card standings. Tuesday’s victory increased their lead over the Brewers to 2½ games in the race for the NL’s sixth playoff spot and moved the Padres to within a half-game of the Phillies in the quest for the No. 5 seed.“We definitely have resilience,” Martinez said.
That put the Padres up 1-0 and got them past Webb, who had allowed one run in eight innings in each of his previous two starts against them this season. The Padres scored three runs in the seventh when Ha-Seong Kim reached on an error by Davis, the Giants’ third baseman, and Grisham followed with a line drive to the seats beyond left field. A one-out double by Jurickson Profar and a two-out double by Machado made it 4-0.
