Lonnie Bunch III, founding director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., will become the Smithsonian’s 14th, making him the first black person to hold this post in the organization’s 173-year history.

Bunch, 66, spent most of his career as a history museum curator, but his most visible role was as the head of the African American history museum, which he took over in 2005. The 19th of the Smithsonian Institution’s museums, NMAAHC became an instant favorite among Washington locals and tourists alike, attracting more than 4 million visitors since its 2016 inception. The museum documents black history and achievement through a collection of 40,000 artifacts housed in a $540 million, 400,000-square-foot gallery.

The Smithsonian, which includes the National Museum of Natural History and the National Air and Space Museum, is the world’s largest museum and research complex. As secretary, Bunch will manage a $1.5 billion annual budget that supports 19 museums, 9 research centers, 21 libraries, the National Zoo and a number of educational institutes. His responsibilities also include oversight of the museum’sand the maintenance of historic buildings and 154 million artifacts and works of art.
