Utah transportation and law enforcement agencies are bracing for a surge in traffic as an estimated 318,000 visitors are expected to flock to the state for the

John Gleason, the Public Relations Director for the Utah Department of Transportation, emphasized the potential for major delays, urging travelers to plan ahead and be prepared for significant congestion on the roads.

The eclipse, set to occur on a Saturday morning, coincides with fall break for 23 school districts and two major universities in Utah, adding to the traffic challenges. Gleason compared the situation to a concert, stating that once the eclipse ends, there will be a rush of vehicles trying to leave Central and Southern Utah simultaneously, causing potential backups and delays.

While UDOT has wrapped up some ongoing projects, travelers are advised to check the status of other construction projects that could impact their routes. Highways such as I-15, I-70, U.S. 89, and U.S. 191 are anticipated to experience heavy traffic, with Moab being a focal point for eclipse enthusiasts.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Utah Highway Patrol, are collaborating closely with UDOT and local partners to ensure roads remain open and safe for motorists. UHP Lieutenant Clay Morgan emphasized the need for patience, advising travelers to enjoy the scenic beauty of Southern Utah and respect speed limits to ensure a safe and timely journey.

As Utah becomes a prime destination for eclipse watchers, state authorities are urging flexibility and preparedness. Travelers are encouraged to stay an extra day if possible, allowing the initial rush of post-eclipse traffic to subside. By planning ahead and being patient, both transportation and law enforcement officials hope to mitigate potential congestion and ensure a smooth experience for all travelers.
