Federal judge allows Scott Shaw to travel to Boston for college hockey’s Frozen Four. But he pleaded not guilty Tuesday from his RV in Austin, Texas, to six misdemeanor charges.

SAN JOSE — For 13 years, more than a dozen San Jose State University female swimmers waited for this day. Scattered around the country, some of them watched on Zoom on Tuesday as the athletic trainer they accused of sexually assaulting them during sports massages appeared in a federal courtroom to face criminal charges that university officials first excused and then ignored for more than a decade.

“He has a prepaid, pre-planned trip to Boston, Massachusetts, to attend the Frozen Four,” one of his two lawyers, Sam Polverino, told U.S. District Magistrate Judge Susan van Keulen. “I don’t know if the court is a fan of the NCAA basketball Final Four March Madness, but this is the corollary.” “I didn’t think this day would ever come,” said Hopkins, who battled leaders in the athletic department for years to take action against Shaw and blew the whistle on the university’s handling of the case. “There had just been so many, so many roadblocks along the way.”

Shaw is charged with violating four different women, two of them twice, between 2017 and 2020. However, the U.S. Department of Justice has counted 23 victims over Shaw’s decade-plus tenure at San Jose State. The statute of limitations likely played a role in the charges affecting only cases over the past five years.
