According to the Special Investigations Unit the officers were responding to a vehicle theft in progress at a home in the area. The homeowner had called police to report that a group of people were trying to pull his Toyota out of the driveway.According to an SIU report, the driver of the Acura drove head-on into a cruiser that had been travelling toward him.

The three occupants were arrested. Two of them, both men, aged 20 and 27, were hurt. They were taken to hospital with a fractured leg and dislocated wrist, respectively. “I am satisfied that the comported himself with due care and regard for public safety, including the safety of the occupants of the Acura, in the series of events culminating in the collision,” wrote SIU Director Joseph Martino. “The plan to approach the suspects from both ends of a roadway made sense as it would significantly limit the possibility of escape.
