Porter Moser's job of transforming the basketball program at Loyola-Chicago has garnered the 50-year-old some national attention. But by turning down the job at St. John's, Moser stays true to a program that its 99-year-old team chaplain, Sister Jean, says Moser now embodies.

Share to twitterLoyola-Chicago head coach Porter Moser applauds his team during the first half against Michigan in the semifinals of the Final Four NCAA college basketball tournament, Saturday, March 31, 2018, in San Antonio. When Porter Moser took over the basketball program at Loyola University-Chicago in 2011, a manila folder was waiting for him on his desk.

. “It is hard work, honesty, sincerity, strategic planning and a great passion for what he does that makes him a successful coach. Add the above to his genuine love for and his personal interest in each team member, both on and off the court, his cooperation and sharing with his assistant coaches, his great desire to incorporate life skills with those of basketball.

Yet, for now, by choosing to remain at Loyola, Moser also makes one thing perfectly clear. He cherishes loyalty over a bigger paycheck and the opportunity to coach in a premier conference like the job at St. John’s would have afforded him.
