Equatic-1, a $20 million ocean-based carbon removal plant in Singapore, will remove carbon generated by 850 people annually.
UCLA and Equatic, a startup formed by UCLA researchers, are gearing up for the construction of Equatic-1. The $20 million full-scale demonstration project will be the world’s largest ocean-based
Equatic-1 will be built in two phases over the next 18 months by a multidisciplinary team comprising researchers and exports from ICM and Equatic at PUB’s research and development facility in Tuas, western Singapore. Equatic’s unique process leverages electrolysis to pass current through seawater which induces chemical reactions to remove dissolved CO2. Unlike traditional methods, Equatic-1 securelyThe technology doesn’t stop at carbon removal; it simultaneously produces approximately 300 kilograms of carbon-negative hydrogen daily. In a, Equatic co-founder and ICM director Gaurav Sant thanked PUB and NRF for their support in creating a world-class partnership to mitigate climate change.
Equatic-1’s potential impact is staggering. At full scale, it could remove as much carbon dioxide as approximately 850 people emit annually. The startup’s plans include launching a commercial plant capable of capturing nearly 110,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, equivalent to the annual emissions of over 25,000 individuals. by 20245 with a three-pronged approach to replace, reduce, and remove carbon emissions.
