MINNEAPOLIS — Simone Biles is four routines away from making her third Olympic team. She led her Olympic and club teammate, Jordan Chiles, by 2.5 points after the first day of competition at the Olympic trials. Reigning Olympic all-around champion, Suni Lee, rounded out the top three.
She originally received a 2-point deduction for a one-handed take off, but Wong appealed her score and eventually received a 14.450. A dominant performance on floor carried Biles back to the familiar first-place standing. The crowd in the arena immediately took to their feet in the fourth rotation once she landed her eponymous vault, a Yurchenko double pike. She earned a 15.975, the highest score of the night by over a point.
