The list of Stanley Cup\u002Dwinning goaltenders over the past two decades is hardly overwhelming.
The last time a Vezina Trophy winner managed to combine his great season with a Cup victory was Tim Thomas in Boston in 2011.
Should he win that one, the second round will have him against the immovable force that has become the Boston Bruins. Probably no one can beat the Bruins now the way they’re playing. So who out there were the Leafs supposed to acquire – if you listen to pundits and screaming fans – that was going to give them a better chance in Round 1 or if there happens to be a Round 2 than Samsonov will.
The last really great, take your breath away, Stanley Cup performance by a goaltender – a goalie who all but stole a championship – was Jonathan Quick in Los Angeles. That was 11 years ago. He was 16-4 that playoff run, with a .946 save percentage, with three shutouts and a 1.41 goals against average. In six games of the Stanley Cup Final, Quick allowed seven goals against – 1.16 goals against average with a .947 save percentage.
A team based on offence couldn’t find offence when it mattered most. Frederik Andersen and Jack Campbell, flawed as they may have been, did not cost the Leafs those playoff years. They were in clinching games. They couldn’t find a way to chip in a goal, to score with the man advantage, to take advantage of their immense skill.Article content
