Brad Treliving is the latest to have the job \u002D the job of trying to make the Toronto Maple Leafs great. This is now his team, and maybe his time.
Fletcher was the best of the bunch lasting six seasons the first go-round, one more later after mercifully replacing the most inept GM in recent history, John Ferguson Jr. Pat Quinn went four seasons as GM and never really wanted the job. He liked coaching better.
But already, before players take to the ice in Etobicoke on Thursday, you can see Treliving’s fingerprints all over the Maple Leafs as training camp begins. Most of this team isn’t really his: He inherited them from Dubas, who inherited from Lamoriello. The challenge has always been building around the apparent superstars, Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander and Morgan Rielly. Dubas added John Tavares to that group and statistically that has worked out.
It’s the same with defenceman John Klingberg, who was once highly thought of. Now he’s playing for his reputation in the kind of place you cannot hide.
