STORY CONTINUES BELOW THESE SALTWIRE VIDEOSWhen Catlin Whelan grew up in in Gaultois, a small community on a small island off Newfoundland’s south coast, the sound of children could be heard throughout the community.
This is doubly so for island communities and otherwise road-inaccessible communities that are only traversable by boat or plane. Though he grew up on an island more than a half-hour's boat ride to the nearest community, he frequently uses the words “free” and “freedom” in describing his formative years.
They would spend all day swimming and boating in the river that runs straight through the middle of the community.In addition to providing the only access out of Mud Lake towards Happy Valley-Goose Bay, the river offers the sustenance of hunting and fishing for residents, which many people choose to live on.Changed community“There used to be kitchen parties every Saturday, and there was the Mud Lake Fair, which is no longer a thing.
