If Byrd's-Eye View had been a senator, he would have consented to statehood for Alaska only after the territory had been partitioned into a sufficient number of states so that the largest would have been smaller than Texas. However, the damage has been done. The situation is one that we who so proudly wear the Lone Star brand must learn to live with.Actually, we will have lost little if any prestige if only we Texans will increase the tempo of our promotional activities.
Whatever the Alaskans may come up with in the way of self-aggrandizement in the years ahead, each and every one of us spiritual sons and daughters of Pecos Bill, Bigfoot Wallace and Strap Buckner must always have, right on the tip of the tongue, a withering comment beginning:"Yes, but in Texas —.
