The following two-and-a-half-year renovation saw the space gutted to its studs. In its place is what appears to be a small cafe and bistro. Along the wall, portraits showed various Huntsville landmarks through the years, and a projector casts an old silent film near the kitchen. A giant geographical map of Texas from the 1930s hangs on the opposite wall.
"When I first got involved, I thought it was going to be a museum of Cafe Texan," Lyons said."It's a unique museum full of artifacts from all over the world — pieces that are a thousand years old from the Ming Dynasty all the way to letters from Abraham Lincoln." However, one display in the collection hits much closer to home. The"Lone Survivor" exhibit honors two Sam Houston State alumni and Navy SEALs: Marcus and Rep. Morgan Luttrell. The former was the sole survivor of the ill-fated Operation Red Wings which resulted in the deaths of 19 special forces members during the Iraq War.
