SAN ANTONIO - The City of San Antonio approved on Thursday a $118,000 settlement to a man who said a San Antonio Police SWAT officer used excessive force agains
t him during 2020 George Floyd murder protests.
According to the lawsuit, Lance allegedly shouted at the officer "That @#$% better be on safety. That’s all I’m saying.” when talking about his rifle. A few seconds later, the officer, who "believed Lance was about to throw something at the officers" fired his SAGE launcher "from point-blank range," striking Lance's right arm. The second shot hit Lance's leg. Both rounds were essentially rubber bullets, which are often used by authorities in riots.
Protesters marched to Police Headquarters, then it turned violent later in the evening. Some individuals broke windows at Rivercenter Mall, and damaged other property. Fireworks were being launched at police officers, a police car was destroyed and CS gas was used by San Antonio Police and SWAT to help disperse the crowd.Chauvin is serving a 21-year sentence at a federal prison in Arizona.
