PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania — Four people opened fire Tuesday on a high school football team as it walked off a field after a scrimmage, killing a 14-year-old player and wounding four others.
The shooting occurred at about 4:40 p.m. Tuesday as the players were leaving the field behind Roxborough High School in northwest Philadelphia, according to reports. Policethe gunmen were waiting in a car parked outside the field when they jumped out and began firing. Police said a 14-year-old shot in the chest was pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m. at Einstein Medical Center. A 17-year-old shot in the arm and leg and a 14-year-old shot in the thigh were listed in stable condition. No information was immediately available about a fourth student taken to a hospital. Another student grazed by a bullet was treated at the scene.
“The School District of Philadelphia is heartbroken and angered by the shooting today outside of Roxborough High School, which tragically impacted five youth and tragically took the life of one,” Superintendent Tony Watlington Sr. said in a . “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends and school communities of all of the students that have been impacted by this horrific incident.”
