Ohtani strikes out 10, but he gives up five runs in six innings, just the second time in his eight starts this season that he allowed more than two runs.
ANAHEIM — Shohei Ohtani had a rare rough night on the mound.
Ohtani said he felt something in his back on a first-inning slider to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. It was nothing serious enough to force him from the game – he still struck out 10 in six innings – but he said it might have affected his velocity and command of his pitches. Manager Joe Maddon pinch-hit for Ohtani in the eighth inning, and he said he will wait until he talks to Ohtani on Friday to determine if he can be the DH. If Ohtani does need some time out of the lineup, the Angels have Taylor Ward, who just happens to be a perfect fit for the DH spot becauseAs for Ohtani’s pitching, he was not sharp, but he did have some moments, evidenced by the strikeouts. His velocity was down about 2 mph on all his pitches.
George Springer led off the game by taking a 97 mph fastball at the knees and hitting it over the left-field fence. Ohtani then retired the next six, including three strikeouts.
