In my family, most of the elders were healthy and well and living on their own until they weren’t. And then it was a relatively short stay in hospital before we were saying goodbye. I hadn’t ever really considered how I’d feel about someone close to me spending a long time in a long-term institution of any kind.
By no mean is he an old man from, my perspective — mid-70s aren't that far away from my mid-50s — and I’ve known this man for close to twenty years. In through the front doors, entering the security code I was given and up to the sign-in desk where they had the hand sanitizer and the blue surgical face masks. There had been a recent COVID outbreak in the home and they were still recommending we use them. I was glad to have one on, for a few reasons as it turned out.
