Vinyl records outsold compact discs in 2022 — the first time that's happened since 1987 — and there are a lot of memories created by music and the various forms we've consumed it over the yearsA small selection of Sheldon MacLeod's vinyl record collection. The first music I have a recollection of listening to was on a small transistor radio and I vividly remember popping in the wired earphone and scanning the dial while I was supposed to be sleeping.
The closest I came to being able to listen to songs I wanted to hear when I wanted to hear them came from my parents’ record collection. Thinking back, it was the music from the late 1960s and early 1970s in that stack of wax.It was mostly guitar rock and pop and it was an awesome musical education. Of course, there was also George Carlin and Cheech and Chong. Not necessarily age-appropriate, but it left a good impression I would say.
In the late 80s Compact Discs came into their own. I vividly remember being at a music store where the salesman was demonstrating the indestructible plastic with amazing sound quality. He put the disc on the floor and stepped on it before sweeping it up and popping it into a player. Of course, he was putting his muddy track on the label side and believe me, CDs were susceptible to scratches and skips from greasy fingerprints and careless handling.
