Kirsten Brueggeman, 27, was last seen on surveillance video in the parking lot of the YMCA off Shortridge Road on at 2 a.m. on Jan. 2, 2021.
“We haven’t turned her phone off yet,” Lisa said. “Sometimes my husband asks why I put myself through that. I call her number fairly regularly even if it’s just to hear the voicemail.” at 2 a.m. on Jan. 2, 2021. Since that night, Kirsten’s bank account, phone and social media accounts have gone untouched. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating Kirsten’s disappearance and her family hired a private investigator to look into the case.
“There isn't a day that goes by that we don't shed some tears,” Rex said. “Sometimes we will just be talking with each other and one of us will start crying. It just seems like a bad dream we can't wake up from.” Kirsten texted her mother on Jan. 1, 2021, telling her she wouldn’t need a ride home from work at Cicis on the south side of Indianapolis, because she was going out with friends. That was the last time Lisa heard from her daughter.
After returning home, he changed out of his work clothes, and a friend, Jared Kramerer, called asking Bradford to hang out that night.“We were going to chill, get some food and play some darts until close,” Bradford said. “The bar was closing earlier than normal around midnight because of COVID.” Before the group left her, Bradford had asked Kirsten if she needed a ride or for someone to call her mom and she said she would be OK, Bradford said.
“I figured since she wasn't near my apartment, she must have gone home,” Bradford said. “There was no sign of Kirsten. I figured she must have gotten an Uber or called her mom to come get her.” Kirsten was walking in an area of the parking lot that was fenced in. If the camera had continued working, she would have come back into view or would have had to climb over a fence, Bockting said.
Bockting reviewed the security footage from the parking lot of Manley’s Irish Mutt and checked with other businesses nearby for additional surveillance video. to look into the case. Her family offered a $10,000 reward in exchange for information leading to Kirsten’s safe return. “I think someone took her from the apartment complex parking lot somehow,” Bockting said. “I think she climbed the fence out of view to the apartment parking lot. Whether that happened for sure or not, I don't know.”
"It does stick with me,” Bockting said as she looked down at her case notes with photos of Kirsten on the first page. “She's small and she wouldn't have been able to defend herself at all. As a parent, I can’t imagine being in the position these parents are in.” “I'm trying to get through my own alcohol issues," Bradford said. "Every time I have more than three beers it turns into wanting to find Kirsten.
“It eats at my conscience because we were there right before whatever happened,” Lybrook Hirt said. “If only we wouldn't have left her there.” “This is the kind of place people come and they know each other,” Manley said. “No one had seen her in the past so some of the employees remembered her. Everybody is still talking about it.” Kirsten was not a perfect person before she went missing. Her parents haven’t tried to hide that fact and acknowledge she suffered from substance abuse and mental health issues, Rex said.
Lisa and Rex have seen suggestions online that Kirsten may have left town voluntarily because of her criminal history. They know that’s not what happened because their daughter would never leave her pit bull behind.
