Now, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that The Black Demon has surpassed multiple Prime Video releases to claim the Number 1 streaming spot on the platform since its debut on August 22. This puts the shark movie above The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 and Red, White & Royal Blue, two notable Prime originals. Despite having very little marketing, it appears the low-budget shark movie has captured the eyes of many using the Amazon-based platform.
Why The Black Demon Is So Successful The success of The Black Demon isn't the only film in recent weeks to arrive on a digital platform. Meg 2: The Trench was released on digital on August 25, featuring Megalodon as the core shark danger of its own movie. It's possible the popularity of The Meg franchise's latest release lent a hand to The Black Demon's streaming success.
The film also fills a niche for shark movies, showcasing the story of a giant shark attacking people akin to a monster movie set in the ocean. Fears of the ocean have also been key to the popularity of shark movies like Jaws, something The Black Demon is able to embrace. In addition, the movie had a limited theatrical release in April, which no doubt helped bolster its current popularity.
Because of how well The Black Demon has done on Prime Video, ideas for a sequel have already been teased by its producers. Whether a second film remains just about sharks or if it branches out into other creatures like Meg 2: The Trench did is unclear. However, the movie's performance means anything is possible for a follow-up in the future.
