Shadow Creek girls' defense paves way to bi-district win over Clear Creek
Clear Creek coach Travis Golden, pictured earlier this season, watched his team fall just short in a 49-40 loss to Shadow Creek in a girls basketball bi-district playoff game Tuesday night in Alvin.ALVIN — When Clear Creek grabbed a one-point lead in the second quarter Tuesday night, the Lady Wildcats appeared to have some much-needed momentum against frenetic Shadow Creek in their Class 6A girls basketball bi-district playoff game.
However, that basket by Clear Creek sophomore Rileigh Hairston somehow awakened the Lady Sharks, who held Clear Creek without a field goal for the next 8½ minutes in an eventual 49-40 Shadow Creek victory.“That’s the story of our season,” Clear Creek coach Travis Golden said. “We couldn’t bounce back from that. Hats off to Shadow Creek — they’re a great team.Shadow Creek used a 10-0 run to end the first half for a 25-16 advantage it wouldn’t relinquish.
The Lady Sharks then began the third quarter with an 8-2 spurt to build a 33-18 advantage with the last two points in that flurry coming from Phillips. Olivia Shaw finally ended Clear Creek’s field goal drought with 4:20 left in the third quarter to pull her team within 33-20.The lead reached as much as 39-24 at the outset of the final period, but Clear Creek continued to battle back and cut the deficit to 44-38 with 2:47 left on a steal and a layup by senior Darrah Rooth.Lady Sharks coach LaToya Micheaux was too involved coaching her team to be aware of Clear Creek’s field-goal troubles.
“Wow, that’s a testament to what we do every day in practice,” Micheaux said. “Playing great defense is the number one thing for us.
